CHANGING YOUR LIFESTYLE: SLEEP

Rather like breathing sleep is something we all tend to take for granted As long as we are managing to sleep we don’t think too much about it. But depression and stress affect sleep profoundly, and both are affected by inadequate sleep, so it makes sense to try to get the best possible sleep to combat these two common ailments of everyday life. Many people have difficulty getting off to sleep wake after an hour or two, wake feeling un-refreshed, sleep fitfully, and so on. This kind of disordered sleep is the norm for millions of people who then wonder why they feel so unwell during the daytime. Unfortunately, it becomes a vicious circle because the stressed person sleeps badly, lies awake and worries more; lack of sleep then leads to pot performance during the day; which brings more stress, and still more difficulty in sleeping, and so on. lack of sleep has many provable ill-effects including: poor energy; reduced ability to do fine tasks; a: increased sensitivity to pain; memory lapses; poor judgment; reduced motivation; decreased sex drive; a feeling of negativity; poor reaction times and general irritability.

Benefits you can expect if you get more and better-quality sleep include:

• You will feel more relaxed and happier

• You will have faster reflexes (especially valuable and even life-saving when driving)

• You will be more mentally agile

• You will be better tempered

• You will feel more positive

• Your memory will improve
