THE HUMAN SEXUAL RESPOSE – DIFFERENCES

There is a difference in the response of men and women during the resolution phase. Men, with few exceptions, need a period of rest before they are able to respond again to sexual stimuli and to reenter the excitement phase. This is called the refractory period. After orgasm, a man’s penis, at first painfully sensitive to touch, becomes flaccid and droops. The detumescence occurs in two stages. In the first, which is rapid, the penis becomes smaller, until it is only about half as big as when stimulated. The second stage, which lasts much longer, reduces the penis to its non-aroused size. An interval of time must pass before sexual stimulation will produce a new erection. This time interval varies in duration in different men and there is no ‘normal’ time during which no response will occur. In general, men under the age of 30 have a shorter interval than men over the age of 50. Many men aged less than 30 have the ability to reach orgasm again within five minutes of ejaculation. Few men over the age of 50 can achieve this performance level, and most are only able to ejaculate once in a 24-hour period.
