Men are sexually aroused more readily and need sex more often than women The response, both mental and physical, to sexual stimulation follows a similar pattern in both men and women. There are variations, of course, and an uninhibited response is rare, for we are conditioned, all of us, by our childhood upbringing, and by our hang-ups. These can, and do, modify our response to the stimuli. Lord Curzon is rumoured to have said that during sexual intercourse ‘a lady does not move’. If a woman has been taught that this dictum is correct she will undoubtedly modify her physiological response to sexual stimulation. Luckily, Lord Curzon’s remark is today recognized as the ignorant, obscurantist remark of a Victorian who approved of a double standard in sexual conduct. It is now recognized that men and women respond to sexual stimuli in similar ways, and it is the similarities rather than the differences in the anatomical, physiological, and psychological responses which need to be stressed.
