CALCIUM SUPPLEMENT

Calcium is actively transported through the absorbent cells of the small intestine with phosphate which is now known as the main synergist for absorption. In fact^ phosphate appears to be a natural regulator of calcium absorption, promoting absorption at low calcium concentrations, but forming poorly absorbable polyphosphate complexes if calcium intake is excessive.

Absorption efficiency is generally 30 to 50%, but may be as high as 80%, depending on the types of food present, the need of the body for the mineral, and the presence of vitamin D. Vitamin D works with the parathyroid hormone to regulate the amount of calcium in the blood. It is extremely important in both the absorption and the utilisation of calcium.

The Division of Nutrition, Bureau of Foods, Drug & Administration, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Washington DC, USA states:

“Animals and man have the ability to maintain calcium balance over a wide range of calcium intakes, provided the calcium/ phosphate ratios are balanced.”

Bio-calcium (available in health food stores) contains a natural form of calcium phosphate which is the most desirable form for both absorption and utilisation in the body.

Calcium absorption is highest when supplements are taken with a meal. Studies have shown that people with inadequate stomach acid have the same absorption of calcium as people with normal stomach acid production.
