A WOMAN’S RESPONSE TO SEX THE VAGINA CHANGES
As sexual excitement increases, the shape of the vagina changes in readiness for penetration. The inner two-thirds of the vaginal barrel lengthens and distends; in highly excited women, this distension is quite marked. The cervix and uterus are pulled backwards and upwards into the pelvis, further expanding the upper end of the vagina.
At the same time, the colour of the vaginal walls changes. Normally, the vagina is a deep pink, but this colour slowly alters to a darker purplish hue as the blood supply to the vagina increases.
In the pre-orgasmic state, the vagina is so distended that all the folds of the wall are stretched and flattened, and the lining becomes thin. In the plateau phase, the outer third of the vagina swells with blood, and this distension may be so great that the lower part of the vagina is reduced by at least one-third. In addition, an increase in blood supply results in enlarged labia minora and majora, which become separated, elevated and turned out.
